• A precocious and somewhat spoiled child, both in terms of material things and attention

• His previously often-indulgent father became sterner and more demanding demanding as he grew older, tamping down his youthful exuberance into a more serious and quiet version of himself
• Envied his older half brother's ability to to be himself apparently without consequence
• Has always been wanted to prove himself and make his family proud and often been inhibited by that; loves his family but also in some ways couldn't wait to get away from them
• Those dreams were dashed once his older half brother actually broke away from the family – with their grandfather's support – and he abruptly became the heir apparent
• Aggrieved by the sudden loss of the degree of freedom he did have, but didn't complain
• Was still allowed to go to college to pursue a science career and grabbed it with both hands
• Finished his bachelor's in biology, then his master's in plant science, and finally his PhD in botany in part to be away from home for as long as possible
• Reluctantly came home once he finished his doctorate shortly before his grandfather's death; has been working at the Observatory since
