• From Io-7, one of the oldest space colonies still in operation; it was decomissioned by the Earth Federation in about 10 years ago, withdrawing food and technical support without warning and with no clear plans for resettling the mass of people who still lived there
• Life on Io-7 was difficult to start with, a sprawling station that had been patched and repatched over its lifetime, with a huge population and not enough resources even when it had Earth support
• Del was born in one of the slummier districts of the station, to a single mother who had neither time nor affection for him. She gave him a place to sleep and sometimes food, but he spent most of his time running around with a pack of neighborhood children who quickly learned to look after themselves, mainly via begging and stealing
• Got by that way for years, branched out into the junk and scrap trade as he got older
• Left home when he was about 16 and slept wherever he could and ate whatever he could find
• Signed up for the aptitude test voluntarily when the independant colonies declared a rebellion and conscription began, because he figured he'd at least get free room and board
